How to Control Your Fear of Speaking

You've been asked to give a presentation in school, on your job, or at a organizational meeting. You dread public speaking, and the thought of standing in front of a captive audience feels you with terror. What do you do?

Here are three quick tips to help you control your fear of public speaking:

1) Practice controlled breathing. Right before you speak or frankly at any time you feel yourself getting anxious or stressed, work on regulating your breathing. It's amazing how much of an impact that breathing has on your body. The more relaxed and intentional you are in your breathing, the more relaxed and in control you are of your nerves and emotions. In my e-book How to Vanquish Your Fear of Public Speaking...Forever, I give some specific breathing technique you can try.

2) Visualize audience approval. We all run through future situations in our mind. It's a built-in rehearsal mechanism we all have. How about putting that to work for you? Chances are that part of your nervousness and fear is based on negative visualization. You imagine yourself messing up. You imagine people focusing on your flaws, laughing at you, rejecting you, etc. Instead of visualizing the worst case, imagine the best case. The more you visualize success, the more you will expect it!

3) Prepare thoroughly. The more prepared you are for your presentation, the more confident you will be. Do your homework. Get yourself ready to speak and ready to field questions, if you are going to take questions from the audience. Preparation is the foundation of confidence.

Overcoming The Fear of Flying

Though I'm quite willing to fly when the need arises, I can relate with those who have a fear of flying. When you get into that long tube, you have surrendered all control (even influence) over what happens between the time you sit down and the time you (hopefully) arrive at your destination and disembark. It can be unnerving, especially when turbulence enters the picture.

Of course, the statistics are clear. Flying is one of the safest ways to travel, but that statistical fact doesn't negate the very real fear that many travelers have. And, frankly, even though I'm not exactly one who is terrified of flying, I'd much rather take the train.

For those who may suffer from the fear of flying, I thought the following article might be helpful...

Fear of flying or Aerophobia is a condition that can cause serious effects both physically and emotionally to any one. This is one of the most common phobias people should be aware of. Being scared to ride an airplane is not a simple problem. In most cases, this fear is a result of underlying conditions that needs to be treated. If you have Aerophobia, here are some things you have to know about how to overcome fear of flying.

Learn the Symptoms

This fear can manifest in numerous ways. To find the best treatment for your condition, you must know the common symptoms you may feel when experiencing an anxiety attack because of the object of your fear. The symptoms you will experience may vary. Sometimes you will experience a symptom you did not experience from your previous episode.

An anxiety attack that stems from phobia may have the following symptoms.

- Stomachache or that butterfly feeling in your stomach.
- headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Sweaty hands
- Difficulty breathing
- Restlessness

An episode can happen anytime and anywhere especially if exposure to the object of fear is imminent. Sometimes, people even experience a panic attack just by thinking of their fears.

How to Overcome Fear of Flying

There are many tips about how to overcome phobias. Some of these tips are to take sedatives before your flight and drink relaxing drinks like champagne during the flight. While these methods may work to relieve your fears, these are just temporary methods of getting rid of your phobia. You will be still be afraid of flying.

If you never want to experience a panic attack because of your phobia again, you have to find a treatment that will help you permanently get rid of your fear. There are numerous options you can take to win over this condition.

Medication therapy works best with psychotherapy but these therapies are effective on their own. With medication therapy, your doctor would prescribe drugs that can help lessen the frequency of your attacks. Psychotherapy works best for phobias as in this type of treatment, you are presented with several things you can actually do to not be scared anymore. Exposure therapy is a technique used to help you conquer your phobia. In this method, you will gradually be exposed to your phobia in controlled situations until you are not scared anymore. You will learn how to overcome fear of flying by braving the object of your phobia.

Flying is one of the most convenient way to travel. Do not miss on the opportunity to experience this convenience just because you are scared of it. There is nothing to be scared of. Face your fear and you will see what you've been missing for a long time.

1. The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren

Even if you have more questions and doubts than faith, you'll appreciate Warren's focus and optimistic look at life. Yes, this is a Christian book. And, yes, Warren makes some arguments that don't sit well with determined antagonists of Christianity, but if you're at all open minded, this is a must-read motivational book. It definitely belongs in your library.

2. The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale

An all-time classic of classics. You absolutely must get yourself a copy of this one! Norman Vincent Peale is one of the most inspirational writers of all time.

3. Better Than Good by Zig Ziglar

One of the all-time greatest motivational speakers ever, Zig Ziglar sums up much of his legacy and beliefs in this worthy book. Get it!

4. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Practical as well as inspirational. Dale Carnegie, in this great classic, explains how you can be successful in your relationships. How you can be popular, respected, and successful.

5. The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz

Truly one of the most inspirational books ever written. If The Magic of Thinking Big isn't in your library, get it and put it there. After you read it, of course! :-)

Don't Waste Your Time - Use it Wisely

Do you waste time? Are you lazy and indolent or are you continuously on the go, using every minute to the maximum?

If you are in the first category, there are a lot of very obvious things you can do to improve, but in this article I want to concentrate on those of us who are already using our time constructively and examine how you can squeeze even more from your day.

You may think that your life is so full that this is impossible, but I recently ran an inventory of how I used my time and realised that there was still some room for improvement. Here's what I discovered.

Timespace #1 – For years I avoided doing any kind of exercise. It was pretty easy for me, I had been skinny all my life and even though I wasn't too fit, I was still the right weight. As I got older, though I realised that I had to take my body a bit more seriously.

Since then I have become a moderate, regular exerciser; I now go running for half an hour every second day and visit the gym three times a week. No problem there; I get satisfaction from using my time well and I appreciate the results.

However, I calculated that I am spending about five hours per week doing great things for my body, but nothing for my mind. So now when I'm pounding the streets or straining at the weights, I use the opportunity to listen to self development programs on my I-Pod, to concentrate on goal visualization, to practice affirmations or just focus on being grateful for all the good things in my life. And there's a bonus too; because the blood is racing through my veins, my brain is more alert and better prepared to learn and grow.

Timespace #2 – I drive a lot. My business requires a good deal of travel and most of it is done in the car. I used to listen to music on the radio or go into an almost trance-like ‘auto pilot' mode, usually to escape the tedium of long distance driving.

Now, though, I put a self development CD in the player, or a language course, or again, I use the time to practice visualizations and affirmations. The privacy of your little tin box allows you to shout, sing, laugh or mumble. Who cares? You are on your own. It's your space.

Timespace #3 – Finally, this one is not so much about finding extra time as making better use of the time I thought I was using wisely. My personal time audit showed me that I was wasting a whole hour, sometimes more, at the beginning of the day catching up on the overnight e-mail load and then planning what I was going to do for the rest of the day.

I prided myself on being an efficient time warrior, but I now realise, that I was missing one of the biggest mistakes of all.

So how did I fix that? Simple. I changed two things. Firstly, I now do my planning, the night before, by taking ten minutes, near to the end of the evening and writing down everything I want to achieve the next day. The bonus here is that overnight, my mind works on the issues even while I sleep, so by the time I get started next day, I am far better prepared.

Secondly, I leave my e-mail inbox until lunchtime. I spend the morning getting through the goals I assigned the night before and then just before I take a break for lunch, I race through my inbox. That way, I find I already feel good about what I've done so far in the day, my mind is much more focused and I don't get distracted.

So no matter how efficient you think you are, take a look again at your day and I'll bet you can find some extra layers of time, you never knew you had. Good hunting.
